Art Basel, one of Miami’s biggest events, also known as “The Super Bowl of The Art World,” returned for its twenty-second year. Consisting of about 79,000 people annually, this year Art Basel begins on Wednesday, December 4th, and ends on Sunday, December 8th.
Because of Art Basel’s great attraction, many art collectors and sellers participate in it. This year, about 286 galleries from a combined 38 countries from around the world, including Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico, will present their unique art pieces at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year, Art Basel introduces 34 first-time participants from Europe, America, and Asia.
From Wednesday to Thursday Art Basel previews begin, including exclusive VIP previews. Starting Friday, the fair opens to the public.
Areas within Miami, like Wynwood and the Miami Design District, have been transformed because of Art Basel. Once Art Basel began, many art galleries and popular shops were added, creating a new energetic atmosphere to the once-quiet and less developed areas.
However, not only does Art Basel lift areas’ attention within Miami, but it lifts Miami to global attention. Due to Art Basel’s massive attendance, over $400 million each year result from it—for sellers, fair organizers, the Art Basel brand itself, and the city of Miami. As a result of the tremendous popularity and revenue from Art Basel, Miami is put on the global art map, aligning it with other cities like Basel, Switzerland, and Hong Kong, China, where other editions of the fair take place.
Art Basel week is not only about art, but also the parties, fashion, and celebrity sightings, allowing for there to be continuous fun and excitement throughout Miami. The event is expected to attract many people due to this year's milestone, with the largest group of first-time exhibitors since 2008, and a new and improved program made to bring and capture new and returning audiences. Art Basel is a must-see event, offering a great chance to enjoy incredible art and explore the exciting energy of Miami.
