This past week the Hebrew Academy girls and boys varsity basketball teams competed in the 5th annual Steve Glouberman Basketball Tournament hosted by Shalhevet High School in Los Angeles.
The tournament consisted of boys and girls teams from Jewish schools across the country. Each team had two predetermined games, which would then lead to seeding each team for elimination rounds.
The boys team kicked off the tournament with two losses from their games against Maimonidies and Frisch. After being seeded, the boys were set to play Hebrew Academy rival KYHS of Boca Raton. They bounced out of a rough start to win the game. Their win resulted in another game against Maimonides. Refusing to lose, the boys fought hard and came out with a win against the number-one ranked team. The Warriors subsequently played Frisch once again in the semifinals and lost to them. The tournament ended with the team on a high, as they placed third overall.
The girls team fought hard as well, but was not able to win any games. Their first game was a complete blowout, losing 61-15 against Maimonides. Their second game was an improvement, but the Lady Warriors still fell short as they were not able to keep up with the fast-paced game Shalhevet plays. Their tournament ended by coming up short against YULA by a few points. Although the Lady Warriors left the tournament with no wins and three losses, they have and will continue to make extreme progress working together both on and off the court, as they learn from their mistakes and gear up for this season.
